In a recent survey of 20 international accounting programs by Technology Personalised, TurboCASH came out on top. This is a good moment to ask the question : how is it possible to deliver a high quality accounting product free?

We are after all just like any other business, in that we use developers and marketers that have homes, grocery bills and schools fees to meet. Consider also our competitors, the three largest of whom employ over 10 000 people between them, are publicly listed and trade at P:E ratios of near to 20. Why do we beat commercial software? How can award winning high quality free software happen?

In short the answer is - You.

When a user takes on TurboCASH, they immediately save $500 in licence fees and save a further $ 200 per year after that. Our 120 000 users have thus saved around $120 M. Many of them have gone on to build multi million businesses. Currently our users save over $20M per year in licence fees, This is an investment that has truly proved worth it to everyone that has made a contribution.

Most of the employees in our competitors are not developing or making accounting software, they are busy with the process of "extracting" licence fees from the SME user base. They build ad campaigns, hold seminars, make telephone calls and produce reports for investors. This is all in the interests of creating an annuity revenue stream from the SME users. They are not in the accoutngin software business. They are in the annuity revenue stream business.

The open source way is different. It is you, our users, that are primarily responsible for our marketing. $500 is not a large expense for a working business, and there are many chances to change from the free accounting package to a commercial one, and there are thousands of employees at our competitors who have thousands of reasons for you to do it. But, you know that TurboCASH is better. It is your commitment to this statement that makes TurboCASH happen.

Whenever tehre are system problems the natural solution seems to be to turn toe the comfort of licnced system, made easier by the thousands of salesmen telling you what a great idea that is. No matter how small it seems at the time, your commitment to staying on open source is what glues this collective effort together.

It is the momentum of your use, your recommendation, your contribution to keeping free software going, that creates a flow for thoase that really need that $500 and are able to save those licence fees and use that money in their start up business. The Millions they make as a result of that is your contribution to making SMEs world over still the most important business sector in the world.

Stay with us by staying up with our technology and spreading its benefits. Our latest versions will give you the benefit of what you have done for us.

... and then they want to take the land back without compensation? The idea is preposterous.
Land only has value if you can keep another African off it. Land only has value if you have complete tenure, right down to the freedom to dispose of the asset.
